Walking With Judas

The day was fading, the moon was on the rise,
The night fell like velvet, a veil across my eyes,
And I dreamed I saw Jesus, he said “Am I the one you seek?”
But I couldn’t face him as I kissed him on the cheek.
He spoke to me softly, in words like falling rain,
My heart was on fire as I cried to still the pain,
They say there’s a heaven, they say there’s a burning hell,
I can’t see between them, it’s just too dark to tell,
Now I’m walking with Judas, and there’s no one to share my load...
It’s raining in Paris, and there’s a sadness on the Seine,
But I’ve no desire to walk those streets again,
There’s too many shadows, too many promises in your eyes,
And there’s a veil of sorrow around the Palace of Versailles.
I hear you calling my name now, but I can’t turn to see,
The doors are bolted, and I’ve thrown away the key,
The bridges are burning, the city’s an empty shell,
And there’s pieces of silver scattered on the road to hell,
They call me the hangman, they say I sold my soul,
They’re talking in whispers, they say I’ve lost control,
But it’s always with me from that night we slipped apart,
And I’ll never lose it - this shadow on my heart.
Now I’m walking with Judas, and there’s no one to share my load,
I’m walking with Judas, and it’s a long and lonely road,
I’m walking with Judas, and the tears falling from my eyes,
I’m walking with Judas, under a blood red sky
Now I’m walking with Judas, and there’s no one to share my load...
Now I’m walking with Judas, and there’s no one to share my load...
This could have been written by any number of people condemned to the Tower, passing under the shadow of Traitors' Gate, and anticipating the executioner's axe. It wasn't.
